12 May 1271: Robert de Somerville narrating that the K. had given to Sir Richard de Middelton archdeacon of Northumberland his clerk, the forfeiture of the marriage of Isabella widow of Sir Robert de Eure, daughter and one of the heirs of Sir Roger de Merlay, who held and holds of the K. in capite, if she married without the K.'s or Sir Richard's licence - that he [the granter] had married Isabella after the death of Sir Robert for 80 l, good and lawful 'sterlings' to be paid to him for his attorney at Newcastle-on-Tyne; viz., 40 l. within the octaves of the Nativity of St. John Baptist 1272; and 40 l. within the octaves of St. Michael next following; under penalty of 10 l. for not keeping one or other of the said terms; one half of the said penalty to be paid to Sir Richard, and the other half to the sheriff of Northumberland for the time - binds himself and his heirs assigns or executors, and all his lands, goods and chattels within the bailliary, for the whole sum, principal and penalty, under the distraint of the Sheriff, till payment of the same, with all expenses and damages incurred; on the simple word of the said Sir Richard or his attorney. Isabel de Merlay (b. 1258; living 1286), is the third daughter and co-heiress of Roger III de Merlay (d. 1266) of Morpeth. She was eight-years-old when her father died. She married Sir Robert de Somerville of Wichnor (living 1271; d. c. 17 Oct 1297). Isabel de Merlay

Isabel was one of three daughters born to Roger de Merlay, Knt. by his wife Isabel de Roos, who married before 1241. Her sisters were Mary (wife of Walter de Bolbec and William de Greystoke) and Alice (wife of Robert de Thweng).  Isabel de Merlay's first husband was Robert de Eure , Knt. (also called Robert FitzJohn), but they had no issue. Isabel married (2) before 7 May 1275, Robert de Somerville, Knt. and by him had six sons and two daughters.
