I BLOXWICH. THE FArAL ACCIDENT AT THE WARD COLLIERY.- Yesterday afternoon Mr. A. A. Fletcher, Borough Coroner, I conducted an enquiry at the hoene of Mrs. Partridge, the: George Inn, Bloxwich Into the circumstances attending the deaths of William Hazlewood and Isaiah Barker, two miners, who lost their lives in consequence of the break. - ing of a wire pit rope at Messrs. Bagnall's, Ward Col- liery, Bloxwlcb, on Monday night. The arst witness called was Edward Holt, the banksman at the pit, who I stated, that on the night in question the two deceased men I were engaged in bringing up air pipes, and had made four journeys I into the pit, bringing up air troughs each time. On the last journey, jest as the cage reached the top of the pit, the rope suddenly broke, and the I deceased fell to the bottom. Their mutilated bodies were subsequently brought to the surface by a couple of," butties" from Mr. Brayford's pit. HIe had been banksman at the colliery forfive months, and during that time he had frequently looked at the rope, and he con. sidered it quite safe. The load was not heavy. Mr. Samuel Bayley was the ground ?? Hazlewood, the butty of the pit, said the rope was examined every few days. He examined it himself on the day of the ac- cident, and thought It quite sound, and he had never heard any one complain of it. The rope in question had been in use at the pit from fifteen to eighteen months, but it was not quite new at the first. Witness had just ascended the pit and was dressing himself at tht 1, s-I ton. {.h o Letp.d, Ijuc no ala not notice any strain upon the rope, nor did he hear any creaking of the frame, as would have been the case if the skip had been I ?? Thomas Wright, engineerl and iron- founder, of Goscote, said he had not had much experience in the use of wire ropes, but he had ex- amined about five or sir yards of the one I in question, and had tested It with a chain-testing machine. I From the examination, he should have thought there was no danger to be apprehended from the use of the chain; there was nothing at all to lead him to suppose that it would be unsafe to use it. From its appearance he con- cluded that a strain of ten tons would be required to break it, but it broke at 6Q tons. Upon again examining it sab- sequently, he found that the internal wires of the rope were not so clean as the outer ones, otherwise, as he had concluded, it would have required a strain of ten tons to break it, He thought the frost would have a bad effect upon the rope. There was no indication of a flaw in the broken extremetien of the rope, bit the pit frame was aplntered.--Mr. Bayley, who was present, explained that 13cwt or 14cwt. was the ordinary weight the rope was required to carry, and that it had never been in actual use before it was taken to the pit in question, it having been placed upon another drnm simply as a "wrap."-David Baldwin, the engineer at the pit, said that on the night of the accident he stood with his hand onths engine, and hearing the bankeman cry * Hold" he stopped the engine, and heard a jerk, and the chain broke,-Hazlewood, on being re called, said he did not cry out, but the two deceased men ?? wit. nesses were called, and the Jurors, after a short conversa. tion, came to the conclusion that the accident was caused. by some of the troughs striking against the sides of the shaft, and causing a sudden strain upontherope. They also bore testimony to the great care taken by Messers. Bagnall and Mir. Bayley to ensure the safe working of the pits, and returned a verdict of " Accidental death." DABLASTON. BOILER EXPLOSION AND LOSS OF LiFE.-Yestorday morning, about seven o'clock, an alarming boiler explosion took place at the Darlasten Green Limestone Pit, belong. Ink to Mr. Mills, by which one maan, the father of a family of seven children, was suddenly launched into eternity, and several others were slightly injured. It seems that at the hour named the engineer ha got the steam up in the boiler in question, whtch was of large size, and egg- shaped In form, and everything was ready for comrmencnlag work at the pit with which it was connected when sud- denly, with a' terrific report, it exploded, and the boiler was rent from end to end into two parts, and thrown some fewyrrds ftom its original position. Thobed of the boiler was torn up, the eigine-house was shattered and unroofed, and numberless bricks, pieces of iron, and other missiles were driven in every direction. Many of these were carrlea a distance of sixty yards, or even more, and one of them alighted upon the head of the deceased, George. Andrews, a. furnacenian residing at the Pleck, who was standing about fortyor fiftyyards away, onthe ether side of the canal, along with some of his fellow-workmen, aid crushed his skull so severely thathe expired almost immediately. His ompanions weir al. sthrouc although not serosly, and the engineer, who was in the engine-house at the time of the explosion, escaped Injury almost by a miracle, but a man named Turley, who was with him, was hurt' by some of the falling materials. The cause of the explosion will doubtkss be fully enquired into at the Inquest, which will be held in due course. Distressing Accident at Bloxwich.— Thursday last. Mr. Fletcher, coroner, held an inquest upon the bodies of two miners, named William Hazlewood and Isaiah Barker, who were killed in one of the pits at the Ward Colliery. It appeared that, on Monday last, the deceased were engaged in bringing some “air troughs" out of the pit, and were coming up the fourth time, when the wire rope by which they were being raised snapped and precipitated them to the bottom of the shaft, a distance of about 150 feet. Both men died instantaneously. The butty, David Baldwin, stated that he had inspected the rope on the morning question, and considered it perfectly sound. He was present in the hovel when the accident occurred, but did not perceive any strain upon the rope. Mr. T. E. Wright, engineer, Goscote, stated that he tested the rope after the accident, and found it required tons weight to break it. He also examined the frame-work round the mouth of the pit, and found it broken. It further appeared that, at the time of the accident, the weight upon the rope did not exceed IScwt. or 14cwt., and it was therefore conjectured that the air pipes had caught upon the frame-work at the mouth of the pit, by suddenly checking the rope, had caused it to break. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death, and expressed their entire satisfaction with the arrangements made by the proprietors of the pit for the safety of their workmen.
