About Isaiah Roberds

Biography

Isaiah Roberds married Elizabeth Noland on August 31, 1861 in Adams County, Ohio. Elizabeth Noland, daughter of John Wesley Noland and Cassandra Griffith, born May 20, 1839 in Ohio. They moved to Iowa and Elizabeth's parents died before 1846 in Iowa.

Tradition was that "Her parents died when she was very young and, as the law demanded, the children were put up as “Bond Children” and placed in very good homes. The people that Elizabeth was placed with moved to Ohio".

In 1850 census, Elizabeth Noland is listed as "Sarah E Noland" age 5, her brother is listed as "John W Noland" age 4 and are in the household of Anderson Griffith and Vernilla Griffith [uncle and aunt], both age 42 in Jackson, Highland County, Ohio.

"Elizabeth lost her speech when her daughter, Nellie was born, and from then on all she could say was yes, yes or no, no. She never complained and was always gay and cheerful. One dark night her nephew, Rev. Carson, a Baptist minister, was visiting. It was all they could do to see. Rev. Carson said that he did think they could make it, and his aunt replied “Oh, yes, yes, faith”. Although she was only able to speak a few words, she still had great faith in God. Rev. Carson was still living at the age of ninety-three, in Mammouth, Illinois."

Isiah and Elizabeth had eleven children.

Thomas Westley, born September 9, 1863. Anderson Griffiths, born May 8, 1865, died September 26, 1868. William Allen, born December 2, 1866. Norville D., born June 27, 1868. Christopher Cobb, born November 21, 1870. Mary Margaret, born July 31, 1872. John R., born May 28, 1874. Ulysses A., born January 2, 1876. Andrew S., born December 18, 1877. David C., born May 30, 1880. Nellie C., born December 2, 1882.

"Since they had such a large family, they had to work very hard, especially when the children started to school. Many times Landon and Charles, children by the first marriage, told their Dad how glad they were that he had remarried and how much they loved their new mother."

"Isaiah and Elizabeth with all their children would get up and go to Sunday School and Church every Sunday. This was a three to four mile trip to Fairfax. Isaiah’s brother owned a store in Flat Run and he would measure all the children’s feet with a stick and then walk back to town and bring new shoes for them."

"Isaiah passed away January 29, 1916, followed by Elizabeth April 30, 1917."
