About Isidor Appel
GEDCOM Note
His original surname seems to have been Yapko. The cause of his death was tuberculosis. He died at the Jewish Consumptives' Relief Society Sanatorium in Denver, where he had been admitted on October 20, 1908 as an emergency case because he was hemorrhaging.
The following information is from Zalman Zylberzweig's book "Leksikon Fun Yidishn Teater" (A Dictionary of the Yiddish Theatre"), derived from material given by Isadore's widow, Anna Appel, and fellow actor Itzhak Lesh/Isadore Lash.
Isadore was born in Radomsk, Poland, to parents who were candle makers. He was a choirboy to a cantor. Afterwards he performed with a cantor, and later with Yiddish actors.
In 1896 a brother brought him to New York, and from there he made a tour across Canada, and afterwards he went around, performing in Yiddish vaudeville theaters in New York, where he married the actress Anna Berkovitsh (who became famous under her married name, Anna Appel).
