Shoppers in a packed shopping centre had to run for cover as a 15-member gang with AK-47s and 9mm handguns robbed storekeeper Ismail Ahmed Suleman, of cash and shot him dead. As the gang left Moorleighs supermarket in the Montford Centre, Chatsworth, Durban, they fired randomly, shattering display windows of other shops in the centre. At least six people were wounded. Two of them are fighting for their lives in hospital. Investigating officer Inspector Mukesh Panday, of the Serious Violent Crimes Unit, said that the robbers ordered Suleman to open the till. "He was having difficulty in opening the till and suddenly one of the robbers shot him and he was killed instantly. The man then went to the safe which was open and took a large amount of cash," said Panday.

One of the wounded, known as Preggy, who was having a beer on the top floor of Jeeva's Tavern, was shot in the stomach. Residents living near the shopping centre took cover as the gang left in five cars. Superintendent Vish Naidoo said that shortly after robbing Suleman, the gang went to a TAB office and robbed punters of jewellery and cellphones. A cashier was robbed of R25 000. Night racing was in progress and the TAB was full. "The gang opened fire, wounding a woman and an off-duty policeman," said Naidoo.
