1872 - The SS India Ship Manifest indicates that "Israel Altshul" traveled with "Joseph Altshul." Joseph was born about 1861. (It is uncertain if this is the correct Israel Altschul, especially as no son by the name of Joseph is known.)
1920 US Census: Israel Altschul, b. ca. 1838 in "Russia," immigrated 1872, naturalized 1878, is listed as a widower living in the apartment of the Salits (his daughter E. Ratchel and son-in-law Michel) in the Bronx.
The NYC Death Index lists the death of an Israel Altschul at age 90 in Queens, NY on November 29, 1927 (Certificate #6164).
NOTES:
Listed in NY City Directories at 35 W. 117th St., Manhattan through 1918 [1919 directory is missing; not listed in 1920 directory].
Israel's brother was Emmet Altschul's grandfather. In September of 2015, I was in touch with David Nussbaum via MyHeritage.com. He is the nephew of Emmet and Lois Altshul. Lois, who was his father's sister, was approaching 95, while Emmet had passed away.
