About Israel Fishman

In the Rechitsa 1906 Duma Voters Database (Second Duma - 1906: Rechitsa uezd Voters List, Minsk Guberniya) Israel is listed as being registered in Kalenkovich as "Srol Khapman" with the patronymic of "Motelev".

Because of the transliteration Yisroel (Yiddish for Israel) was recorded as "Srol". "Motelev" means the father's name was Motel (the suffix '-ov' or '-ovich', both mean 'son of'). As we know, Israel's father was Nussie Muttel. His property is valued at 90 rubles in 1906.

When he arrived at Ellis Island in 1907, the immigration officers couldn't understand his Russian or Yiddish, so they asked what he did for a living (He was a fish merchant), hence the name "FIshman:"

In the 1930 US Federal Census, he is listed with his wife Rachel as renting their home for $15 per month.
