Israel Higgins was born April 26, 1706 at Eastham, Barnstable, Massachusetts. He was the son of Samuel Higgins and Hannah Cole. [1][2][3][4][5]
On Nov. 2, 1727, he married Ruth Brown, with whom he had 10 children[6] [7][8]:
Israel, b. Oct. 3, 1728[9]; m. Elizabeth Aiken In 1779, Israel Higgins served in Captain Daniel Sullivan's company of volunteers in the Bagaduce expedition. (DAR books reports his death as 1818 in Eden, Maine). [10] Jesse, b. June 26, 1731 [11] Ruth, b. June 5, 1733 [12] Sylvanus, b. June 8, 1735 [13] Lydia,, b. Oct. 9, 1737 Heman, b. Nov. 25, 1740 Rachel, b. June 28, 1743 Eunice, b. Oct. 30, 1745. d. Nov. 22, 1748 (Eunice was the only Higgins child to die in childhood). Hannah, b. May 22, 1748 Seth, b. Feb. 4, 1750/1 His first wife Ruth died June 13, 1768.[6] On March 9, 1769, Israel married the widow, Ruth (Mayo) Smith, "daughter of Israel and Mercy (Ryder) Mayo and widow of Thomas Smith.[5]
Israel died at Middle Haddam, Connecticut, on Feb. 7, 1788.[5][14] He is buried at Cover Burying Ground in Eastham, Barnstable, Massachusetts. [15]
Research Notes
Not to be confused with his son Israel Higgins: "Israel Higgins served in the French and Indian War and in the Revolution. He was a private in Capt. Elijah Robinson's co., of Col. John ELy's Connecticut regt. in 1777. His name appears on a "billeting roll" of the Company with remarks,-- "Enl. June 16, 17_., Marched from home July 22, 17_. No. of days billeted himself, 37." He resided in Middle Haddam parish, town of Middletown (lated Chatham), Conn. George Higgins was appointed administrator on estate of Israel Higgins April 1, 1793. Distribution to heirs Jan. 14, 1794."
