His had been an individual act of resistance, one of the first of the war in occupied France.
Karp had attacked a detachment of German soldiers marching in goose-step through the town.

Karp was born on 20th January 1886 in Warsaw. He may have been a volunteer in the French army in WW1. See http://maitron-fusilles-40-44.univ-paris1.fr/spip.php?article157875 , which also gives more detail about the events that led to his execution.
