Israel Orowicz

LENA & ISRAEL HOROWITZ

Israel Horwitz born March 14, 1874 in Lomza, Russia. Parents are Bernard Horwitz and Annie Rosenburg both from Russia. Note: (JW 3-13-2023) I suspect that Bernard Horowitz (Berko Orowicz) had a first wife named Chana Rosenburg. Israel and his sister Sora Rivka, and brother Jacob were children of his first wife. Berko had a second wife, Sczyna Zeyberg whose children were Calko and Chana. (This needs to be verified.)

Lena (Leah) Levin(e) born about 1884 in Russia. Father is Solomon (Salmo) Levine or Lewitzer from Szczecin Russia Poland. Mother is Shaine (Chana) Modell or Ruth Bermann.

Israel and Lena married in about 1901 and arrived in London about 1902. Rose Horwitz was born August 21, 1904 in London. The family then lived at 46 Crispin st, Spitalfields London.

Israel and Lena then had Esther Horwitz born March 20, 1906. They lived at 27 White Lion st, Whitechapel, London.

Israel immigrated to the US first. It’s unknown when he left the UK for Canada, but he arrived in Detroit, Michigan from Canada on June 15, 1907.

Lena, Rose and Esther left Liverpool on September 3, 1908 on the ship Dominion. They arrived in Quebec, Canada on September 12, 1908 and immediately traveled to Los Angeles, CA where Israel lived.

The 1910 US census has Israel, Lena, Rose and Esther living at 611 North Grand Ave, Los Angeles, CA. It lists Israel as a tailor.

On June 29, 1910 Israel declared naturalization intent in Los Angeles, CA.

Israel Horwitz died on January 7, 1913 of tuberculosis.

In 1914 Lena and her daughters were living with Max Aronson at 831 W 11th st in Los Angeles. Her occupation is listed as a dressmaker. Family oral history says Lena worked for a movie studio.

According to the 1920 census, Lena, Rose and Esther had taken the last name of Aronson. They lived with Max at 1206 Kingsly Dr in Los Angeles, CA. The census states Max is a painter and is also a Russian immigrant that arrived in the US in 1896. He was born March 8, 1878.

Lena and Max were married on May 31, 1930 in Santa Ana, CA.

Lena Aronson died on September 30, 1937. She died of a blood clot and cellulitis. At that time she was in Brooklyn, New York at 177 Stockholm St. Her brother David was the informant. It is unknown why she was in New York.

Max Aronson died May 23, 1945 in Los Angeles, CA.

           Rose Horwitz

Rose Horowitz born August 21,1904 in England, came to the US with her mother and sister in 1908.

In 1923, she went by Rose Aronson. She lived at 2206 Grand Canal, Santa Monica, CA. Her job is listed as a stenographer. In 1927 she lived at 406 Venice Blvd, in Santa Monica.

On September 7, 1930 Rose married Bennie Robert Graxiola. He was born December 18, 1902 in Monterey, California.

Rose died died April 1, 1961, in the care of her niece Ruthe, of breast cancer. She had no children.

          Esther Horwitz

Esther Horwitz was born March 20, 1906 in Whitechapel, London, England. She emigrated to the US with her mother and sister on September 12, 1908 and traveled to Los Angeles where her father lived.

On August 29, 1921, at the age of 15, she married Eugene Ceriale who was born October 8, 1901 in Chicago, IL. Eugene was an auto mechanic and they lived at 406 Virginia Ave, Santa Monica, CA.

Esthers and Eugenes daughter Ruthe Anne Ceriale was born December 26, 1921.

Esther and Eugene divorced in about 1923.

Esther lived in Santa Monica, CA at 4064 Venice Blvd until she married Garland Ripley on May 3, 1929. They married in Lewiston, Idaho. After living in Idaho for a few years, they moved to Sacramento CA. Garland Ripley died on October 3, 1968. Esther later died on January 11, 1993 in San Luis Obispo, CA.

Solomon born 1860 in Russia, wife Sara born in 1865 in Russia, children Philip a cabinet maker born in 1883 in Russia, Solly born in 1887 in Russia, Samuel born 1891 in Russia, Benjamin born 1900 in Spitalfiields, Annie born 1894, and Solomons brother Harris Horowitz a cabinet maker born 1872 in Russia.
