David Jackson. In 1916 Myer's brother Israel loses his home and all their possessions as the retreating Russian army destroys all the villages and small towns. Israel and his family go first to Vitebsk and eventually reach St Petersburg where Israel dies in 1918 'a victim of the turbulence and violence that accompanied the making of the new order of society in Russia.' Israel's son Saul writes from St Petersburg in 1918 to Myer in Dublin informing him of the death of his brother
DAJ from Chronicle of Myer Joel Wigoder, Today (April 16th 1905) I was privileged to see my brother Israel Isaac with his oldest son Judah (thirteen years old) here in Dublin, after not having seen him for sixteen years. My brother Dr. George had not seen him for twenty-two years. Tears of joy flowed from our eyes, and I recited the blessing: “Blessed is He Who resuscitates the dead.” I invited him to make me happy at least for the first day of Passover, and with great joy we celebrated the first Seder until eleven o’clock. They stayed here for three weeks, and then returned safely to Mazeikiai in Russia where he lives. He is wealthy and supports his family honourably. He has a drapery shop, and in addition to him and his wife, he also employs three people, two at a salary of one hundred rubles per annum, and one at fifty rubles per annum. They eat at his table. He spent approximately two hundred and fifty rubles just to visit his brothers. May God sustain and watch over him, and remove any illness from him, so that there be peace on Israel.
