About Issac Denman

Isaac Denman (5) son of Thomas was born in New Jersey, presumably inthe then small village of Springfield. He was born December 9, 1759and Died April 8, 1835, by his own hand, hanging himself. His wife,Rachel, mentioned in his will made in 1830 and Proved April 16, 1835was dead at the time of Isaac's death. Isaac left New Jersey in 1774at the age of 23 years and settled in Wallkill, Ulster (now OrangeCounty) NY where he resided until his death. He, himself stated onSeptember 10, 1834 at the pension office, that he had resided atWallkill 60 years and previous thereto had resided in New Jersey. Hewas a soldier of the revolution. Birth: Dec. 9, 1759 in the state of New Jersey Service: Enlisted in1776 and served terns until 1780 as private under Capts. Isiah Vailand Stewart, and under Cols. McClaughery and Cantine and Newkirk inthe NY troops. On Nov. 28, 1832, Daniel Green of Minisink, Orangeco. Stated he was acquainted with Isaac Denman during the Revolutionand that he had served with the veteran in the militia.

Pension: Certificate 20614 was issued Sept 25, 1833. No referencewas made to wife or children by veteran. His residence was given asWallkill, Orange Co. where he enlisted in the Revolution and wasliving a the time he received his pension in 1833. The place of hisdeath and the date were not shown.

Isaac Denman married first Mary Owen, daughter of Gershom and HannahKnapp Owen and all his known children were by her. Issue as far asknown were:

1. Isaac Jr., no further record

2. Gershom Terry no further record

3. Andrew

4. Christopher no further record

5. Moses Terry, m. Catherine Lounsbury but was probably dead at thetime his father's will was made, no further record

6. Elizabeth md John Kirk and was residing in Ohio

7. Sarah Matilda m. William Patterson and was residing in Ohio asearly as 1830.

Note: The will mentions Sarah as wife of John Kirk and Elizabeth aswife of William Patterson, but in as much as conclusive evidence ispresented by Professor D. T. Englis, a descendant, that Sarah Matildamd Wm. Patterson, it may be supposed that an error was made by whoevermay have written the Will for Isaac Denman.

Know Ye, that at Goshen, in the county of Orange, on the Eighth day ofMay, in the year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and thirtyfive, before John b. Booth, Esquire, Surrogate of our said county, thelast will and testament of Isaac Denman, deceased, (a copy whereof ishereunto .... ), was duly proved, and is now approved and allowed ofby as: and if appearing unto us, that the said deceased was, at thetime of his death, and inhabitant of the town of Wallkil, in the saidCounty of Orange, by ... whereof, the proving and registering thesaid will and the granting administration of all and singular, thegoods, chattel, and credits of the said testator, and also theauditing, allowing, of final discharging the account thereof, dothbelong unto the Surrogate of the county of Orange; the administrationof all and singular, the goods, chattels, and credit, of the saiddeceased, and any way concerning his will, is granted unto AndrewDenman, Executor, in the said will named, he being first duly sworn,faithfully and honestly to discharge the duties of such Executor. Intestimony whereof, we have caused the Seal of office of our saidSurrogate to be hereunto affixed. Witness, John B. Booth, Esquire,surrogate of the said County at Goshen, the fifteenth day of June inthe year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and thirty five andof our independence the fifty ninth.

In the name of God, Amen. I, Isaac Denman of the town of Wallkill,County of Orange and state of new York being weak in body but of asound and perfect mind and memory (blessed be All Mighty God for thesame) do make and publish this my last will and testament in mannerand form following (that is to say) I give and bequeath unto mybeloved wife Rachel one cow and one swine - I do also give andbequeath unto my son Isaac the sum of fifty cents and I do bequeathunto my son Andrew all my personal estate except as above, towit afanning mill, loom and loom tackling and one horse wagon and harness aclock beds and bedding all my other household furniture, notes bookaccounts, and stock, and I do direct that my said son Andrew shall payall my lawful debts, and I do hereby appoint my said son AndrewExecutor of my estate. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my handand seal this fifteenth day of January in the year one thousand eighthundred and thirty. Signed sealed and published by the said IsaacDenman to be his last will and testament in the presence of us whohave subscribed our names as witnesses in the presence of thetestator.

Between the tenth and eleventh lines the words "except as above"interlined before signing this will.

State of new york, Orange county, I Henry Little, of the town ofWallkil, in said County, being by the Surrogate of the county ofOrange, duly sworn and examined, deposes and says that he was wellacquainted with Isaac Denman, late of the town of Wallkil, in saidCounty, deceased; That the deponent was present as a witness and didsee the said Isaac Denman, deceased, subscribe at the end thereof, theinstrument, now produced and shown to the deponent, purporting to bethe last will and testament of the said Isaac Denman, deceased, ...date the fifteenth day of January, in the year One thousand eighthundred and thirty: that such subscription was made by the saidTestator in the presence of this deponent and in the presence ofDaniel Williams and Enoch Reeves, subcribing witnesses to said will:That the said Testator at the same time declared the instrument sosubscribed by him, to be his last will and testament: wherefore thisdeponent, and the said Daniel and Enoch, signed their names at the endof the will, at the request of the said Testator: and that the saidTestator at the time of executing and publishing the said last willand testament was of full age, of sound mind and memory, and not underany restraint. And the deponent further says - That he drew up saidwill under the special direction and instruction of the said testator;that said Testator left said will with deponent for safe keeping thathe safely kept said will from the time the same was executed asaforesaid, until the same was offered for probate - that the will nowoffered for probate, is the same, as when executed as aforesaid andexamined this 8th day of May 1835
