About Ivor Holloway

Dr Holloway was educated in Belvedere College

and NUI Earlsfort Terrace (now UCD). He began his

medical career in Britain and was later posted

overseas as a doctor with the Royal Air Force in

South Africa.

On his return to Ireland, Dr Holloway was

appointed as gynaecologist to Croom Hospital. He

subsequently became the first consultant obstetrician

gynaecologist to be appointed to the Mid-Western

Health Board. In this capacity, he was instrumental

in setting up and overseeing the development of the

Regional Maternity Hospital, where he remained

until his retirement in 1982.

A gentleman in the finest sense of the word and a

great friend, he was regarded as a gifted and

dedicated gynaecologist by his medical and

midwifery colleagues. The part he played in the safe

delivery of so many lives in the Mid-West region

cannot be underestimated.

Even after his retirement Dr Holloway regularly

visited the Regional Maternity, where he was

extremely popular with patients and staff. Members

of the medical community stress both his dedication

to his work and his perpetual good humour.

Dr Anthony Dempsey who succeeded Dr Holloway

as consultant obstetrician gynaecologist for the Mid-

Western Health Board, recalls ‘a gentle individual

who was always available day or night’.

To Dr Holloway’s wife, Kay and his family, we

offer our sincere sympathy. Ar dheis De go raibh a

anam.
