ACCIDENT NO. 33 - June 14, 1911 - Alex Ikonen, South Hecla Branch, C.& H. Alex Ikonen met his death on this day by being struck on the head by falling rock and dying from his injuries. An inquest was held over his body and the following witnesses testified:

Joseph Kruszka: “We were at work at the 8th level No. 11 South Hecla yesterday afternoon. Ikonen and myself were putting in a cross stull when a small piece of hanging came down and hit him on the head. Just as it struck him, I ran over and picked him up. It was timbered up close there and I considered it perfectly safe.”

George M. Rees: “I am a practicing physician and surgeon in Houghton County. Was called on to attend injuries to Alex Ikonen, about half past five last evening. I examined the deceased and found a large scalp wound about two inches in length extending over the top and towards the back of the head. There were other small minor wounds, none of which were of much importance. His symptoms showed intracranial pressure - having convulsive twitching, extending all over the left side, most marked on the left side of the face, left arm and left leg. The pupil of the right eye was very much dilated and the pupil of the left eye was markedly contracted. These symptoms pointed to hemorrhage in the left side of the brain and one of the large blood vessels, the middle meningeal artery. Death was caused by pressure due to hemorrhage of this artery resulting from the injury. He died at half past six last evening.”

Verdict: "We find that the said Alex Ikonen came to his death on the 14th day of June, 1911, from injuries received by being struck on the head by falling rock on the 8th level of No. 11 shaft, South Hecla Branch of Calumet and Hecla Mine."

TAPATURMA nro. 33 - 14.6.1911 - Alex Ikonen, South Hecla Branch, C.&H.

Alex Ikonen kohtasi tänään kuolemansa, kun päähänsä osui putoava lohkare. Hän kuoli vammoihinsa.

Vainajalle suoritettiin kuolemansyyntutkinta ja kuultiin seuraavat todistajanlausunnot:

Joseph Kruszka: “Olimme töissä 8:lla tasolla kuilussa nro 11 South Hecla eilen iltapäivällä. Ikonen ja minä olimme asentamassa poikittaishirttä kun pieni riippuva pala kalliota putosi ja osui häntä päähän. Juoksin heti hänen luokseen ja nostin ylös. Työkohde oli vahvistettu puutavaralla ylös asti ja pidin sitä täysin turvallisena.”

George M. Rees: “Olen lääkäri ja kirurgi Houghtonin piirikunnassa. Minut kutsuttiin hoitamaan Alex Ikosen vammoja noin kello puoli viisi eilen illalla. Tutkin vainajan ja löysin ison, noin 2 tuumaa pitkän haavan päänahassa pääkallon yläosasta kohti takaosaa. Oli myös vähäisempiä haavoja, joilla ei ollut juuri merkitystä. Hänen oireensa viittasivat kallonsisäiseen paineeseen - nykivää kouritelua koko vasemmalla kehonpuoliskolla, erittäin merikittävää kasvojen vasemmalla puoliskolla, vasemmassa käsivarressa ja vasemmassa jalassa. Oikean silmän pupilli oli erittäin laajentunut ja vasen pupilli huomattavasti supistunut. Nuo oireet viittaavat verenvuotoon vasemmassa aivopuoliskossa ja yhdesssä isoista verisuonista, keskimmäisessä aivokalvon valtimossa. Kuoleman aiheutti sen valtimon verenvuoto, joka aiheutui hänen saamastaan vammasta. Hän kuoli eilen illalla puoli kuudelta.”

Päätös: "Me toteamme Alex Ikosen kuolleen kesäkuun 14. 1911 saatuaan päävammoja putoavasta kivestä Calumet and Hecla -yhtiön kaivoksessa, South Hecla -haaran kuilussa nro 11, tasolla 8 ."
