About Jacob Balliet
Jacob Balliet in 1685, lived in France when King Louis XIV of France declared void the "Edict of Nantes" which had given all people religious freedom. At that moment, all Protestants who did not obey, were persecuted or killed, soldiers (Dragonades) quartered in their homes and their property was confiscated. Rather than be put to death, Jacob Balliet, a judge, escaped, traveled over eight hundred miles at night to Schalbach where he established a home. Sachalbach was about 40 miles northeast of Nancy, France and 35 miles southeast of Metz. Later, when Louis XIV promised religious freedom, this area was given back to France. It had been part of the old German or Holy Roman Empire. Persecutions began again, and some of the Hugenots emigrated to America to escape religious persecution. Among those who went to America were two of Jacob Balliet's grand children, Maria Catharina Balliet and Paulus Balliet.
