About Jacob Block

Jakob Block (1834 Svihov Bohemia-1897 St. Louis Missouri)

Jacob was the son of Daniel Block and Sara Wedeles. Jacob was born on June 25, 1834 in House Number VX in Svihov, Bohemia. His mother was not married to Daniel at that time. Later Daniel was acknowledged as the saudek (sandek) of one of Jacob's brothers, Abraham, who was born in 1838. The presumption is that Daniel was also the father of the rest of Sara's children. They were all born in the same town, every other year, in the late summer.

Jacob came to the United States with his mother Sarie and sister Ferronica and brother Abraham on the immigrant ship Louisiana and landed at New Orleans on May 29, 1848. He was 14 years old. They used the name Wedelles.

He and his mother and father and siblings and was recorded in the 1850 Census in St. Louis, Missouri.

Online records of the Missouri Secretary of State's office naturalization archives contain the second papers of Jacob Block dated March 17, 1856 with one witness Henry Block. Filed in the St. Louis Circuit Court. Homeland was Bohemia.

Jacob was a witness to the second papers of his brother Abraham Block on July 24, 1852. The other witness was Samuel Mandelbaum.

Jacob Block was recorded in Kennedy's 1860 Street Guide and Directory for St. Louis. He was described as a butcher, working at 11 South Market. He may be living at Cecile, between Arrow and Ohio. Also in this edition of the directory is Henry Block, a butcher, living between Cecile and Ohio and Buena Vista.

He was recorded in the 1880 Census in Missouri, Washington County, Breton Township, Osage Post Office with his wife Clara. He was born in 1835 as was his wife in this taking. Both were born in Bohemia as were their parents. No children were recorded. Breton was in the lead mining area of Missouri. He worked in a dry goods store.

In the 1870 Census and in the 1880 Census his brother Abraham Block and his wife Sophia ran the same store in the same place. Their clerk in 1870 and 1880 was Adolph Fischer who married Celia Schwarzkopf in 1880. Celia was the daughter of Dora Block Schwarzkopf Berwin. She was Abraham and Jacob's sister.
