About Jacob Benjamin Bosshardt

Jacob Bosshardt came to America in 1840. (Certificate of Origin is dated June 1840) when he was 23 years old. He probably landed at Wilmington, Delaware. He appeared before the Court of Quarter Sessions for the City and County of Philadelphia on the 4th day of August, 1845-"that it was bona fide his intention to become a Citizen of the United States." He was granted citizenship on the 28th day of September, 1847 at the Court of Common Pleas for the City and County of Philadelphia.

Jacob Married Barbara Sophia Busch on June 13, 1844 in Philadelphia, PA. She was born on Sept. 7, 1821 at Hilgarthausen, Wurttemberg, Germany. Bapt. July 6, 1857 near St. Paul, Minn.

Jacob was a dyer by trade and came to America at an early day and located in Pennsylvania. He ran a news route for a few years and then conducted a grocery store until 1855 when he came west and bought a farm of 160 acres in Wheeling Township, Rice County. He then returned to Pennsylvania and in the fall of the same year brought out his family and settled on his farm in Section 21, where he did general farming until 1883. He rented his farm to his son Daniel and moved to Faribault, where he lived in retirement until his death on April 27, 1884. Mrs. Bosshardt died at Nerstrand on Sept. 28, 1908.

His illness was inflammation of the bladder and was very painful.

Interment for both is at Faribault Evangelical Cemetary or Maple Lawn Cemetary as it is now known.

Bosshardt Jacob Biography Bk-Rice Co Families 1981: Jacob Bosshardt, son of Jacob Bosshardt Sr, b Sep 29 1817 in Maur, Switzerland, Zurich Canton. (Canton was term used to signify province, co, or twp) Oct 5 1817 he was baptized. His trade in Switzerland was silk dyeing. At age 23 he decided to come to Am. Papers were drawn up, signed & sealed by witnesses of his church, co, & state gov'ts, attesting to his good citizenship record in his native country. They also declared their willingness to recommend Jacob to his new fellow citizens. Jacob migrated to Am in 1840. His ship probably harbored in Wilmington, DE. Aug 4 1845 he requested Am citizenship. He rec'd his naturalization certificate Sep 28 1847 in Philadelphia, PA. He m Barbara Sophia Busch who b Sep 7 1821 at Hilgarthausen, Wurttenberg, Ger. She was baptized Jul 6 1859 near St Paul & lived very religious life. For over 50 yrs she was mbr church. She was present at Fall Jubilee Festival at East Prairie Parish where she was 1 of 1st church mbrs. She d Sep 28 1908, w/funeral svcs at Faribault Evangelical Cem. Jacob lived in PA where he ran news rte for few yrs, then managed grocery store until 1855 when he came west. He bought farm of 160 acres in Wheeling Twp, Rice Co. He then returned to PA. In fall 1855 he & his family came west & settled on his farm in Sect 21. Jacob did gen'l farming there until 1883. He then rented farm to son, David, & moved to Faribualt where he lived in retirement until death in1887. Inscribed on his tombstone is, “For me, to live in Christ & to die is gain--Phil. 1, 21.” On Barbara’s grave is “Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord.” Children of Jacob & Barbara were 8: John, George, Elizabeth, Jacob, Margaret, Daniel, Henry & Samuel.
