This surname was spelled "Cockerham" on early records, and seemed to change to "Cockran" shortly after Jacob, II's generation, although variations of the surname continued to be seen for at least another 100 years until the spelling seemed to settle on "Cochran"....

The Cockerham family can be found in Anson Co. NC, based on land records of Jacob, I. Montgomery Co. NC was formed from a part of Anson in 1789 and the family continued to reside there and is traceable by land records (search in both Anson & Montgomery Counties).

Jacob, II & Mary (English) Cockerham were married November 8, 1775 in Anson Co., NC.

According to researcher Jerry L. Cochran (oaktree5@marshill.com), Jacob, II and his family left Anson Co., NC and settled in an area northeast of Dawsonville, GA. He states that the entire area that is now known as Amicacola Falls State Park was once the Cochran estate. ***need to research land records of that area***
