GOODMAN, HANKS posted by Pat Salisbury on Wednesday, March 25, 1998
I am looking for information on my HANKS and GOODMAN lines.
Jacob HANKS was born 21 Jan 1833 where I am not sure but he is buried in Stephensport, Kentucky in Breckinridge County where he died 6 Jul 1907. He was married to Polly "Mary" ROBBINS who was born ca. Dec. 1834 in Kentucky. Their son William Burrell HANKS was born 25 Aug 1859 in Decatur County, Indiana and he died 10 Aug 1899 in Breckinridge County, Kentucky. He was married to a Sarah Alice GOODMAN who was born ca. 1868 in Jackson County, Illinois and this is all that I know about her. The informatin that I have on Sarah and William I attained from their marriage license which I got from the Breckinridge County Court House. I have not been able to locate any information on Sarah Alice GOODMAN or further my research of this HANKS branch. I have a copy of the Baber book but it does not mention much about these people, and it says nothing about my Sarah Alice GOODMAN. Any help would be much appreciated and I am more than willing to share what I have.
(Note: Polly "Mary" Robbins may be from incorrect information, or there could be a previous marriage to a Robbins by Mary Jackson, who was 22 at time of marriage. The birth information for Mary is of course incorrect - a year off and a state away. Polly would not be an unheard of nickname for Mary at the time. William Burrell is a very Jackson sort of name. Of course, the 1907 year is off, as the Breckenridge News published his year of death as 1909 a couple weeks after the event. But the date July 6 is correct. Would presume the William Burrell Hanks and Sarah Goodman marriage information to be correct, but worth checking.)

I am looking for information on the surname of GOODMAN. My ggrandmother was Sarah Alice GOODMAN and she was born ca. 1868 in Jackson County, Illinois. She was married to a William Burrell HANKS 19 Mar 1885, where I do not know.
I know that they settled at one time in Breckinridge County, Kentucky and I know that William Burrell HANKS was born 25 AUg 1859 in Decatur County, Indiana. This information I got from their marriage certificate. Other than the above mentioned information I am clueless as to anyother information on them.
I am up against a brick wall here. Can anyone help me out? Has anyone came across these names in their GOODMAN research? Maybe someone knows someone else who is researching this line who could help me. Any help at all will be gratefully appreciated. I am willing to share everything and anything about my line. Just let me know.

Pat and All:
I have a copy of Adin Baber's book, THE HANKS FAMILY OF VIRGINIA AND WESTWARD (1965). I had received it many years ago through the Shawnee Library System (I believe this may be in Kansas City) by way of interlibrary loan.
Anyway, your line is listed. Jacob is listed on p. 127 & 167. William Burrell Hanks is also listed & Wm. Jacob Hanks and spouses on p. 167. However it says Wm. Burrell Hanks's mother is MARY JACKSON. She and Jacob were married March 1, 1856. She is listed as dau. of Burrell Jackson and wife Margaret. Other information is also given.
Jacob Hanks is listed as son of William Hanks, Jr., b. 1 Jan. 1804 in Hardin Co., KY, d. 1900 Stephensport, KY; md. Elizabeth Knatzear on Sept. 30, 1827. William Hanks Jr. was interviewed by Mrs. Caroline Hanks Hitchcock on May 11, 1895. There should be more on him included in her book:
Hitchcock, Caroline Hanks. NANCY HANKS: THE STORY OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN'S MOTHER. New York: Doubleday & McClure Co., 1899. 105 p. This book is also available through interlibrary loan.
William Hanks, Jr. is son of William Hanks, Sr., b. ca. 1775 in VA, d. 1857 in Breckenridge Co., KY (buried at Robbins graveyard). md. 1st, Margaret Wilson on Dec. 28, 1797 in Madison Co., KY
William Hanks, Sr. is son of Abraham Hanks, b. ca. 1745 Northern Neck of VA, d. ca. 1790 Campbell Co., VA; md. Sarah Harper, prob. dau. of George and Elizabeth (Shipley) Harper.
This Abraham Hanks and wife Sarah Harper, as reported by Adin Baber on p. 82 of his book is the same Abraham Hanks given as father of Nancy Hanks Lincoln and the grandfather of President Lincoln. Your William Hanks, Sr. would be a brother of Nancy and an uncle of the President if Adin Baber has the lineage worked out right. (There has always been questions on Lincoln's Hanks ancestry.)
Abraham Hanks is son of Luke Hanks, b. ca. 1685 Richmond Co., VA, d. bef. Feb. 1757 Lancaster Co., VA; md. ca. 1710 Richmond Co., VA to Elizabeth (Turner?), b. ca. 1695, d. ca. 1750 Richmond Co., VA
Luke is son of William Hanks, b. ca. 1650 Gloucester Co., VA, d. bef. 7 Feb. 1704 Richmond Co., VA; mdd. bef. May 1678 to Sarah Woodbridge, b. ca. 1650 VA, d. aft. 1708 Richmond Co., VA
William is son of Thomas Hanks, b. bef. 1630 Malmesbury, England, d. ca. 1675 Gloucester Co., VA; md. ca. 1650 to Elizabeth, b. ca. 1630, d. ca. 1675 Gloucester Co., VA
I hope this helps you, Pat, and also some others.

Ben M. Angel notes: If only it was that easy.
(1) Nancy Hanks Lincoln was an illegitimate child, born to Lucy Hanks, and fathered by an unknown "well-bred Virginia farmer or planter" who was in the area where she lived on temporary business.
(2) Still tracking Lucy's ancestry.
(3) Jacob's lineage requires verification, as the dates appear significantly off. Where Lincoln's maternal heritage connects into Jacob's lineage is also a big question.
Jacob Hanks' burial location is listed at:
This is the Stephensport Christian Church Cemetery. The existence of an obituary is affirmed (see above), as is a transcription and picture of the grave (though these are not yet online). He is the earliest Hanks listed at this cemetery. The church had "long since been abandoned" by 1974.
