About Jacob Jansz Ellerbroek

Married 1 Lijsbet Brouwer Feb 23 1777 (in Andijk records, but married in Grootebroek). Children: Jan (June 1 1777 Grootebroek), Dieuwertje (Jan 17 1779), Jan Brouwer & Jan Ellerbroek (July 16 1780 Andijk), Cornelis (Feb 3 1782), Ariaantje (May 11 - 31 1783), Teetje (Sept 12 - Oct 8 1784), Pieter (Dec 26 1787), Trijntje (July 18 1789), Evert (born 20 October 1791), Jan (Dec 28 1794), Pieter (1798), Jacob (Nov 21 1799). Married 2 Maartje Jans Tens (Tensen) on March 20 1803. Their marriage record is found in Andijk records, but they were married before the municipality of Bovenkarspel. Jacob was living in Grootebroek; Maartje in Bovenkarspel. Maartje was also known as Mari, Marij or Mary. Maartje and Marij were often used interchangeably back then. Child: Jacob (Jan 19 1804), Jacob Jansz Ellerbroek and Lijsbeth Jans Brouwer apparently made profession of faith in the Bovenkarspel Reformed Church and then transferred their membership to the Buurtjeskerk in Andijk on May 31 1778. They lived on the eastern side of Andijk - in fact, there's a pretty good chance they didn't move at all. Their house seems to have been in an area between Andijk, Grootebroek and Bovenkarspel. They also appeared on the Buurtjeskerk membership lists of 1788, 1790 and 1793. Jacob was a cattle breeder - he is called a "veehouder" and “veeman” in several records such as his children’s marriage records. Most of his sons are listed as “veehoudersknecht” (cattle breeder servant or assistant), so they must have worked for him. So it must have been quite successful. While he is listed as Jacob Ellerbroek in all Andijk files, he is listed as Jacob Elderbroek in most Grootebroek files. Other members of his family are also occasionally listed as Elderbroek, but most of the time as Ellerbroek. There were 2 Buurtjeskerk membership lists made in 1823: one alphabetical according to last name in which Dieuwertje Ellerbroek, Jacob Ellerbroek, Evert Ellerbroek, Trijntje Ellerbroek and jacob Jacobsz Ellerbroek were all listed together and one by family in which Dieuwertje Ellerbroek and Klaas Zwier appear at the very beginning (1 & 2), Jacob Ellerbroek & Marytje Tense appear as numbers 39 & 40,, Evert Ellerbroek and Trijntje Jongejeugt as numbers 77 & 78 (just below Trijntje's parents, therefore probably working for them), Jan Koolhaas and Trijntje Ellerbroek at numbers 353 and 354 (376 members listed: compare that to 100 founding members in 1667). Notes summarized by Bertram Sluys from the novel “Vrije Westfriezen I” by Cornelis Gerritsz Sluys: (see notes under Cornelis Cornelisz Sluis): One of the guests at Cornelis Sluys’ wedding was one of their neighbors, Jacob Ellerbroek, a supervisor, who had had nine children by his first wife, and was now married to the widow of Jacob Kooiman, who she had had eighteen children with.Chapter 11. Old Jacob Ellerbroek was now living with his son Jacob and his wife Trijntje. When he had first become an elder in the “Afgescheidenen” [now Gereformeerde] Church Jacob Jr. was still sending his oldest daughter Marijtje to school. But after talking with Jan Hasselman, a Mazereewer, he decided the school was too liberal and pulled his kids out. Now Jacob Sr.'s children were divided between the Afgescheidenen and Mazereewer churches, and he wasn’t too sure where to go himself. Then his grand daughter Geertje asked him to teach her to write because she couldn’t go to school to learn it. It broke her grandfather's heart. Pieter Ellerbroek, Jacob’s brother, was the first American connection in the family. In Jacob Ellerbroek's death announcement in the Oprechte Haarlemsche Courant, when he died on Aug 6 1846 at the age of 90 years 7 months he left 7 children and 7 unmarried children, 33 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren. To the end of his life, he enjoyed full good health and a clear mind.
