From the Friday, Sept. 13, 1889 Chicago Daily Tribune, page 3: Jacob Gamer's Narrow Escape. The horse and buggy belonging to Jacob Gamer, a baker, at No. 81 South Halsted Street were precipitated into a deep excavation on Wright Street near Newberry Avenue about 8 o'clock last night and it took an hour's work to extricate the horse. Mr. Gamer was driving it when the horse pitched headlong into the ditch he was thrown clear over the excavation slighting on the ground and escaping without a scratch. The animal escaped injury but the buggy was smashed to pieces.
