ORRVILLE -- Jacob A. "Jake" Garman, 98, formerly of North Lawrence, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2012, at Brenn-Field Nursing Center in Orrville.
He was born in Warwick on July 4, 1914, the son of Jacob and Julia (Willoughby) Garman, and was united in marriage to Irene Brown on June 13, 1936, in West Virginia. She died Jan. 2, 2011.
He had been employed with the Pennsylvania Railroad for a period of time and worked for 37 years at the Republic Steel Company in Massillon, until he retired.
He was a member of St. Michael's Lutheran Church in Marshallville, the Frontier Riders of Orrville for many years, where he helped out with the rodeo and horse shows. He was a baseball coach for St. Michael's Hot Stove League and also played fast and slow pitch softball. Jake was an avid square dancer and especially enjoyed his family and grandchildren. As a resident of Brenn-Field Nursing Center, he enjoyed greeting all the visitors when they came to the nursing home.
Surviving are daughters, Rowena (Glen) Bachman of Dalton and Luanne Power of Marshallville; sons, Neil (Mary) Garman of North Lawrence and Gar (Donetta) Garman of Osceola, Mo.; grandchildren, René Mack, Gary Garman, Jill Sanford, Rod Garman, Jacquie Boisen, Tammy Dalessandro, Dani Radford, Sheridan Garman and Jeremy Garman; 17 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Nelson Garman; and sisters, LaVaughn Seebach, Margaret Berger and Mildred Oser.
Services will be held at Auble Funeral Home in Orrville on Saturday, Nov. 17 at 11 a.m. with pastors John Corsi and Jacquie McMillen officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery, Marshallville.
