Church of Latter Day Saints (Mormon) - polygamous

  • President Brigham Young called he and 35 others who to go on a mission and "blest under the hands of President B. Young and the Twleve with a promise that every word should come to pass" he left by horseback on October 19, 1849. GREAT personal written account of the trip!
  • After arriving at Salt Lace (Zion), he went on several more missions (New England States, England). In New Orleans, described it as "a mixt multitude assumbled from all nations and is full of all manner of abomination and wickedness."
  • upon marrying Mary, she went to live with his second wife Emma (his first wife was Mary Snow, a sister of apostle Erastus Snow).
  • They then had a call from President Brigham Young to join a group to locate in southern Utah to subdue the Indians and colonize that area.
  • Mary and the 2nd wife, Emma, lived together. Emma's health failed and her 6 children where raised in part by Mary.
  • Mary, Jacob and child Claudius were in Bellevue during the Mountain Meadow massacre.
  • "Brother" Brigham Young would "put-up" with them as he passed with his "favorite wife" on the way to St. George.
  • 15 years later (date?) the family, including 5 children, moved to Provo.
  • He was the First President of the Seventies organization of the LDS Church and seemed to be connected with higher church dealings.
  • He was arrested for "adultery" since he was not legally married to Mary and though he was ordered to not live with Mary, after three weeks, he continued to do so and that was the end of the trouble.
