Jacob Gates

First we have three different dates of birth for Jacob. The family information says he was born on July 29, 1851, the Newspaper obituary shows 7/24/1853 and his stone shows 26 years, 10 months and 15 days making it 7/25/1853. It is doubtful that he was born in 1853 and likely he was born in 1851 as we have both a Death Certificate and obituary that state his sister Leah was born in June of 1853. So his year of birth is incorrect on his stone and in the paper.

Jacob moved with his parents and settled near West Liberty, Iowa, in October 1863. Betsy Wilcox and Jacob Gates were married in Downey in August 1877. Betsy died in March 1879. Jacob died on Friday, June 9,1880 at the home of his Mother in-law Mrs. Wilcox in Downey, Iowa of consumption just a little over a year after his wife. Both were members of the Methodist church of Downey. Information obtained from his obituary. They had no children.
