About Jacob C Heckman
Jacob Heckman was 21 years old when he enlisted as a private in Company B of the 71st Ohio Volunteer Infantry in 1861. By the time he was wounded at the battle of Nashville in December 1864, Jacob had been promoted Corporal, Sergeaant, and then 1st Sergeant.
Like so many of his comrades in the 71st he developed severe dysentery in Texas. Jacob was treated in the regimental hospital but succumbed on August 20, 1865.
Jacob was buried at Victoria where his regiment was camped, and the soldier's remains were removed to the National Cemetery at Brownsville, grave H187, after the war. His remains were relocated for a third time. Along with many other soldiers from the Brownsville cemetery, in 1911 his grave was relocated to the Alexandria National Cemetery but placed along with all the others in a common mass grave. This occurred even though their graves had been marked at Brownsville.
