About Jacob Kopp

Jacob Kopp

Birth: 1846 Death: Dec. 28, 1893 Belding Ionia County Michigan, USA

HANGED HIMSELF.

JACOB KOPP OF THIS CITY COMMITS SUICIDE AT BELDING.

JACOB KOPP, aged 40 years, for a long time an employe of the Berkey & Gay furniture factory, residing with his wife and three children at 186 Second street, committed suicide in Belding, Ionia county, about noon yesterday by swallowing a large quantity of Paris green and hanging himself by the neck, in an abandoned chemical house. The reason for his committing the rash act is supposed to be despondency through being unable to obtain employment.

Mrs. Kopp was notified of the tragic death of her husband by wire and immediately left for that place to bring the remains here for interment. Besides his immediate family Mr. Kopp leaves two sisters, both residing in this city. One of them stated yesterday that Mr. Kopp visited his family here Christmas and appeared to be very cheerful. He left for Belding Wednesday for the purpose of resuming his work there, but was laid off the next day and from that time up to two hours before his death he threatened to kill himself. He was not in as straightened circumstances as hundreds of poor people are in this city, for he owned the house on Second street where he lived and his family was never hungry.

TOOK POISON, THEN HUNG HIMSELF.

JACOB KOPP, a German of Grand Rapids, was found hanging by the neck from a shaft in the chemical works building at Belding. His face was covered with paris green and it was evident that he had taken a dose of this. Out of employment.
