NOTE from Craig Sheldon:

There is currently no source for Jacob Coetzer's 18 Sept. 1742 date of death. Although he does seem to have died c.1742, one reference states that Jacob died in c.June 1742.

TANAP.net in an article on Cape Policy Resolutions, has the following footnote:

Jacob Coetzer is op 25 Julie 1686 te Reichstadt (Zákupy) gedoop as Hans Jacob Kutzer, seun van Wentzel Kutzer en Susanna Weiss. (Navorsing gedoen deur Dr. S.B. Rascher (Rassie))

(Sien M.O.O.C. 7/2: Testamenten, 1712−1720, no.123; M.O.O.C. 7/6: Testamenten, 1738−1745, no. 91.)"

Jacob might have died c.June 1742, according to P.J.

Son of Wenzelous Kutzer

1709 arrived in the Cape on the Noordhoek from Wielinger 1717 Becomes a citizen after being a farm worker. 1722 married Susanna Snyman and has 10 children

The Coetzers first lived in the Stellenbosch Drakenstein area. Early in the 19th century they left the Cape following the general "evacuation" as the British took control. They eventually settled in the Alice/Fort Beaufort area in the Eastern Cape and so in to Cradock after suffering many hardships through the so called "kaffir"wars.

All these treks were made by ox wagon and eventually the last one to Rhodesia with the Henry/Steyn Trek in 1895 from Kroonstad in the Free State. They reached Chipinga after 7 months

They were allocated a farm in Northern Melsetter (Tandaai) on the Mozambique border. They named the farm Tarka after Tarkastad near Cradock where they had previously lived. When the farms were eventually surveyed they found Tarka fell within Mozambique so they were obliged to move again. So they went further afield to Odzi where they bought the farm Swartlaagte. This was in the time of Oupa Jan Harm Coetzer. It was here that my mother (Lousia Fredrika Coetzer's mother) stayed with them for a few years when her mother - the eldest daughter, died at the age of 26. Leaving four children orphaned, The farm was sold in about 1933 when Oupa died...
