Committed Suicide OBITUARY FRIDAY MAY 20, 1910 PLATTE CENTER SIGNAL Our community was greatly shocked about Sunday noon when a telephone message conveyed the startling information that Jake laun was dead at his home five miles northeast of Platte Center, and that his death was caused by a revolver shot, self-inflicted. the facts as we learn them are that between 11 and 12 oapos;d5clock Sunday, he left the house saying that he was going to start the engine to pump some water, In a very short time his wife, who with her little daughter was in the house alone, heard a shot. She rushed out and found him laying behind the granary dead. Neighbors and relatives were summoned by telephone and Coroner Gass called from columbus. It seems that when he left the house he took a 38 revolver which has been kept around the premises for many years, and a small mirrow which was kept in the kitchen. It is supposed he looked in the mirror, placed the revolver to his forehead and fired. the bulet passed clear through his head and death must have been instantaneous. The coroner upon his arrival did not think an inquest necessary.
There is no accounting for this rash act except that he had become mentally unbalanced. For several months he had been gradually failing in health, and for the past few weeks he was unable to work. He was in Platte Center Saturday afternoon, consulted a physician and took medicine home with him. He had a good farm, a fine home, and it doesnapos;d5t seem that anything but a loss of reason could have prompted the act.
He leaves a wife, one son one daughter, one brother and sister, two half brothers, and one step-brother. He was born in Kentucky and came to Nebraska when 9 years of age with his mother and the other children, and has since lived in the neighborhood where he died.
