About Jacob Strait Lawrence
Adams County Free Press, Corning, Iowa Thursday, April 28, 1960, Page 2
Jacob Strait Lawrence, son of George and Emmeline Lawrence, was born October 25,1876, near Brooks, Iowa, and passed away suddenly at his home in west Corning on April 19, 1960, at the age of 83 years, 5 months and 24 days. He was the eldest of ten children. Mr. Lawrence spent his entire life in this community except for a season of farming in Minnesota. He received his early education in the country and Brooks schools, later completing a course in architectural drawing. This interest continued to develop and resulted in the planning and construction of a number of buildings throughout the county and assistance in several others, including the present Methodist Church, High School and Rosary Hospital. During the later years, though crippled with arthritis, he spent much time in his basement work shop making or repairing articles of wood. As a youth he became affiliated with Christian work, after joining the local Methodist Church where he was a faithful member as long as health permitted. He was united in marriage to Mary L. Lincoln on December 31, 1901. To this union three sons were born. Jake, as he was familiarly known, is survived by his wife, Mary; two sons and their wives, Howard and Helen of Norwalk, Iowa and Thomas and Ruth of Klamath Falls,Oregon. Also nine grandchildren, four great grandchildren, four sisters, Jessie Schafroth, Ruby Harlow, Bessie Pell, Nellie Bunting, nieces, nephews and many friends. He was preceded in death by one son, Charles, in 1949, two brothers, Rolla and Floyd and three sisters, Emma Wilcox, Dolly Spring and Phoebe Wilmarth. Jake served the community several times as assessor and census taker. His mind was keen and held many interesting incidents of earlier day history. He loved his family and home, was a friend and helper to any whom he could serve, in truth a man by the side of the road. Services were held Friday April 22, 1960, at 1:30 p.m. from the Roland Funeral Home in Corning, Iowa, with Rev. Brown Garlock officiating. Music was by Mrs. Esther Roland, Mr. John Riegel and Mrs. Marvin Elmore. Pallbearers were Ray Keefe, Ralph Cooper, Carl Gillet, Laird Richey, Clarence Bender and Glen Reynolds. Interment was in Walnut Grove Cemetery.
