Jacob Bertha Levison. 85, financier, civic leader, and patron of music, died in his sleep yesterday at his home at 2420 Pacific Avenue, San Francisco. He was one of the founders and a director and president of the San Francisco Musical Association, sustaining organization of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. He had been a governor of the San Francisco Opera Association and was in charge of music at the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition. BORN IN NEVADA Born in Virginia City, Nev., in 1862, Levison came to San Francisco at the age of 13. He entered the insurance business in 1878 and was still active at the time of his death, as a director of Fireman's Fund. He was a member of many San Francisco clubs and at one time had been a director of the San Francisco and California Chambers of Commerce. He had been president of three insurance groups, the Board of Marine Underwriters of the Pacific, Pacific Coast Automobile Underwriters' Conference and Board of Fire Underwriters of the Pacific. MARRIED IN 1896 In July, 1896, Levison married Alice Gerstle, daughter of Lewis Gerstle, a founder of the Alaska Commercial Company, which had pioneered in Alaska following the territory’s purchase from Russia. Besides his widow, Levison is survived by four sons, John G., Robert M. and George L. Levison, all of San Francisco, and Charles G. Levison of Pasadena; a sister, Miss Alma Levison of San Francisco; and eight grandchildren. Services will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m., at the Halsted & Company Mortuary, 1123 Sutter Street, San Francisco. Interment will be private.
