About Jacob Lieberman
Cook , William Shefrin. (Jack Lieberman worked for him in 1917 and 1918 as restaurant manager on Chambers St. Manhattan.) Officially reported to William's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Shefrin, of 210 Seventeenth street, as being killed in action Sept. 5 (1918) word has been received in Brooklyn that Cook William Shefrin who was attached to Company C, 306th Infantry has been awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism in action. His parents however have not been apprised by the Government of the valor their son. Whether he performed the heroism in the battle in which he fell they are unable to say. However, in a letter to them dated a few days before he was killed, the soldier told briefly of being wounded while going to the assistance of comrades who were wounded. In performing this act, he wrote, a piece of shrapnel struck him in the head and face. Prior to being inducted into service last September he was the owner of a restaurant in Chambers street, Manhattan.
Both Jack Jacob Lieberman and William Shefrin, second cousins, were descended from Zalmon Shifrin, of Zembin Belarus Russia! Nathan Shefrin (Nisson (Naton) Shefrin) mentioned here, was born in Apr 1865 in Zembin, Belarus. He died on 19 Jan 1938. He married Esther Dube ? about 1887. She was born about 1866 in Belarus. She died on 19 Apr 1945.
