The story goes that Jacob Korah Sands was cutting ice on the Susquehanna Rives and was accidentally hit by a train. The conductor did not realize that Jacob had been hit until he pulled in to Mehoopany station and found Jacob Korah Sands' leg attached to the train.
This is the article: According to a newspaper article, found in my grandmother's belongings, Jacob Sands was killed by a train in Mehoopany. He had been cutting ice on the river and was crossing the tracks as he headed home. The conductor was unaware of the accident until he found a piece of Jacob's leg when the train stopped. The newspaper article said he was 35 and left a large family. (Grandma said that her her grandmother - Jacob's wife, had 13 children.)" By his headstone it is apparent that Jacob Korah Sands was actually 40 years old, the part about the 13 children sounds reasonable. His wife eventually remarried a Krewson and after Krewson's death reapplied for a pension based on Jacob Korah Sands' Civil War military record.
