Jacobi 'Cobi' Venter (1942 - 2009)

Brief overview:

Cobi (67), an anti-apartheid activist who was born in the Netherlands, and her husband George Venter (78), were beaten and tortured on 31st May 2009 on their Theescombe smallholding, Port Elizabeth.

George was found dead lying in a pool of his own blood that morning. Cobi passed 10 days later from her injuries.

    • Cobi was raped, both eye sockets were smashed, her nose broken and cuts to her face and neck, her ribs, knees and thighs bruised, and cuts on her back when she was dragged over broken glass. Cobi passed from her injuries on 12th June in hospital. Her husband George (78) was tortured to death - bludgeoned with a hammer, a large rock and a golf club, and dragged around the house.

    • Six attackers, who were arrested and appeared in court, had gained entry to their property - Vernol Fillis (39), Mbulelo Breakfast (31), Vuyo Plaathies (33), Makwenkewe Lunga Pamle (24), Lukhanyo Bolo (24), Zonwabo Kilani (24).
    • Warrant officer Phillip Bekker, an expert who specialises in forensic analysis testified that a pair of shoes belonging to Pamle had made bloody foot prints at the scene.
