James Loper was a New Netherland settler. Perhaps fearing his loss to the community, the town of East Hampton gave Loper five acres of land in 1673 if he would stay and continue his trade as a cordwinder (shoemaker), which he practiced when not running his whaling business.

James married Elizabeth Howell 1674 East Hampton, Suffolk, New York. Eleven years later she filed divorce proceedings against him 15 July 1685 but never completed them because of his unexpected 1691 death in Boston while only 43. James participated in his step-father's Long Island whaling operation for many years. She and their children returned to East Hampton where she passed away.
