Koos (51), died two days after being assaulted by between four and six policemen on the N12 highway, between the Groenfontein and Balmoral off-ramps, on 25th October 2007. He was en-route to a farm in Delmas to deliver chicken manure. Police shot twice into his truck when he was unable to stop the massive vehicle immediately, and made a U-turn. He told his wife that when he climbed out of the truck the police began beating him and wouldn't listen to his explanation.
His daughter Rina said, "My father said he was suffering from terrible pain. He said his ribs and his insides were hurting very badly." "He said the doctor had given him painkillers and that he was going to shower and lie down. He was very confused and emotional. He was crying when he spoke to my mother and was very shocked about what had happened." She said it was the last time she and her mother had spoken to him, before they heard that he had died in the bedroom of a guesthouse he was staying in.
The young man at the farm he was delivering to, who does not wish to be named, said, when he arrived at the farm on the Saturday morning he was tired, and complained of internal pain and that his left ribs were hurting badly, experiencing terrible pains in his stomach, and also vomiting and struggling to breath. The family took him to a doctor at local hospital, and was given painkillers and sent home. They then dropped Koos off at the guesthouse. The young man went to the guesthouse later at around 20h30 and discovered that Koos was dead.
