About Jacobus Smit
Jacobus "Kobus" Smit (1953 - 2013)
Brief overview:
Kobus (60), was shot dead at his house on the Heatherdale Agricultural Holdings, Akasia, outside Pretoria on 24th December 2013. Three armed males gained entry into the property, and after hearing a noise, Kobus went outside with his firearm to check. The perpetrators fired around 16 rounds at him, eight of which hit him in the body and face. Kobus fired off four rounds, but it is unclear if any of the perpetrators were injured.
“There was a bullet hole in my dad’s chin and chest. They shot him while he was lying on the ground, to make sure that if the other six shots hadn’t killed him, those two would." “We know it was at close range because the tiles underneath him were cracked and had bullet holes in them,” said his son Juan.
Security services, police, paramedics and family members arrived shortly after the shooting. Kobus was declared dead by paramedics.
Police spokesman Warrant Officer Matthews Nkoadi, said, "Three men had gained entry to the Smits’ house. A TV and a kettle were left near the door." Nkoadi said it was believed a shoot-out ensued between the suspects and Smit. It could not be confirmed if any suspect had been injured.
