According to information received from Edinburgh University Library, James Jr wrote the following thesis, held by the library: "On the diseases that follow idiopathic fever". (See under Sources.)
Their alumni records show (referring to James senioir) that "His son, James was MD Edin. In 1851 and succeeded him in practice." - although it doesn't state where this practice was.
The extract from "History of Medicine in South Africa" on his father James' profile states that "two of their sons, James and Alexander, both Cape-born, qualified in medicine [in Scotland] and returned to practise at the Cape at the mid-Century".
