Indenture from James Watson and wife to James Ritchie.

Oath of Samuel Ritchie, recorded.

On June 10, 1808 James' children, Nancy, John, Alexander, Rhoda & Mary signed an indenture (a deed or agreement) to John Berry. One other person signed the agreement. A Nannie Ritchie, relationship unknown. Since the legal age was 21, James' other children were unable to sign the document. Also, since James wife Mary did not sign, it probably means she was also deceased. It is my opinion that James never left Virginia and he died/drowned crossing Carr's Creek, near Coeburn, Russell (now Wise) Co., Va. Only his son Alexander and his family migrated to Kentucky. Alexander was on the 1810/1820 Clay Co., Ky census & the 1811 Clay Co., Ky Tax List, 1830/1840/1850/1870 Perry Co., Ky census.

The name RITCHIE seems to have been a very popular Norman name that came with William the Conqueror's overthrow of Saxon England in 1066. In old German, which descended from the Frankish dominions in Gaul (France), the name of Ricard denoted a powerful and brave chief or ruler. A large number began to appear in records of Scotland about a century after the conquest. The RITCHIEs apparently grew from the same orgin as another form of Richards and were a scept of the clan MacKintosh of the area of Dalmunzie, Scotland, whre the name was common. There were also MacRitchies that seems to have lost the Mac when most families came to America. Several RITCHIEs were found in the plantation era.

1. James RITCHIE

James RITCHIE was born in 1757 in Scotland. He came to America on a ship, "The Marrigold" from Liverpool, England along with several brothers and settled in VA. James married Mary Polly KEITH about 1775 in VA. Mary was born 1755/57 in Buncombe County, NC, the daughter of Samuel KEITH and Catherine RING. James died 1818 at Carrs Creek, KY.

James RITCHIE served in teh 2nd VA Reg. in the Revolutionary War, after which he moved to Buncombe, NC and is on the 1790 census with his wife Mary Polly KEITH RITCHIE and several children. They later moved to KY.

Mary Polly KEITH had three brothers, two; Gabriel KEITH and Ruben KEITH are on the 1790 census of Buncombe Co., NC. Gabriel was a spy for sometime to watch the Cherokee Indian movements.

James RITCHIE settled in Carrs Creek, Perry Co., now Letcher Co., KY. He drown in 1818 while crossing Carrs Creek. He was buried alongside the river but no one knows exactly where.

Children for James and Mary are:

2.Alexander Crockett RITCHIE

2.Mary Polly RITCHIE

2.Elizabeth RITCHIE
