Born 1766 in County Kildare,Leinster, Ireland, where his forebears had lived for over 600 years. It is said that the family went from England to Ireland with Strongbow, Earl of Pembroke, in 1169 or with Henry II in 1172.

- He followed "a clerkly or scholastic calling." He was a Methodist.
