About James Maitland Balfour

Increased coastal shipping during the mid 1800's highlighted the hazards of navigating Foveaux strait.
Low-lying Dog Island in the narrowest part of the strait was chosen as the site for Southlands first lighthouse.
It is also New Zealands tallest lighthouse (35 metres), built from stone quarried on the Island.
Designed by James Maitland Balfour, uncle of Robert Louis Stevenson.
The beacon was first lit in 1865.
The lighthouse has operated automatically since 1989
