Keith" : Beginning on page 40, Sunday, August 18, 1861 . . . we traveled through the mud and wet some 8 miles toward Weston and t hen came to our guides house A plain old farmer by the name of Conrad. Aft er routing him out of bed he treated us to a good supper of Bread milk wi th molasses &c. for it was about 9 O'Clock at night. We then started aft er a man by the name of Jim Bennett a notorious character also to visit t wo or three others. We were conducted by the old man's Son a very intellig ent large physical man. We wound around through the back woods and hills t hrough swamps and over logs about 4 miles when we came to the house standi ng in the middle of the field. We surrounded the house and entered and sea rched it but the bird was flown. We searched other houses for arms but wi th the same success. Upon our return to our guide's house where we rest ed till morning we were drenched for an hour with a severe storm and as t he road very rough and it was very dark we had one of the hardest tram ps I most ever had. I laid down covered with mud and the water dripping o ff me. But we slept sound and sweet until the break of day. The other squ ad took Capt Keith a notorious character.

Monday, August 19th 1861 We were awake early and partook of a good old Virginia breakfast corncak e, biscuit and c. and waited for the arrival of our train They did not arr ive before 10 O'Clock when we found our other scouts had been a little mo re successful than we were.
