Formerly of Hamstead villa Handsworth, Birmingham England.

Probably emigrated to New Zealand with brother Alfred George Betts on the "Indemnity" arrived Wellington 19 Jul 1842. Ref: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ourstuff/Indemnit... . But death printout suggests he didn't emigrate until about 1877.

Headstone in Wakapuaka Cemetery, Nelson, reads "Sacred to the memory of James Henry Betts died Aug 26th 1886 aged 60 years. Gone but not forgotten." Birth record and NZ bdm index both say age 70. Death record says died 18th August 1886.
