About Pvt. James T. Black, USMC
James Black was born on May 31, 1921. He was raised by Ellis and Cora Black on the family farm in Thompson, Alabama.
Black enlisted in the Marine Corps on June 19, 1941. He attended boot camp in San Diego, was chosen for Sea School, and was finally assigned to the Marine detachment aboard the USS Arizona on October 10.
The entirety of Private Black brief time on active duty was spent aboard the Arizona; aside from occasional training sorties, the battleship rarely left Pearl Harbor. Black's duties aboard the ship are unknown, but he was likely a member of one of the 5-inch batteries just below the main armament.
James Black was killed on December 7, 1941, when the Arizona was sunk at Pearl Harbor.
