Married LaVern Orton on June 18, 1917. They had one child, a daughter named Beverly.

James was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, a Veteran of World War I, a musician, and a piano technician. He was also a member of the Tabernacle Choir.
