About James Lewis Coffman
James Lewis “J.L.” Coffman, 77, of Mount Pleasant. He was born Feb. 18, 1924, in Jones Mills, a son of the late Isaac Irvin and Ortha Neiderhiser Coffman. He was a graduate of the former East Huntingdon Township High School, Class of 1942. He was a former sales representative, having been employed by Pritts Feed Mill, J.I. Case Col, Master Miz Inc. and Anden’s Dodge and Subaru of Belle Vernon. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army with the 40th Infantry Battalion, America/ He served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater of Operations from 1942 until 1945 in New Caledonia, Guadalcanal, Bouganville, Leyte and Ceba. He then served with the; occupational forces in Japan in 1945 in Yokohama and Fijisawa.. He was discharged in 1946. He received the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbons with two Bronze Stars, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, Bronze Arrowhead and Victory Medal. “J.L.” was also a member of the First United Church of Christ of Mount Pleasant. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a son-in-law, Robert C. Shenk Jr.; and a brother-in-law, Harry Robbins. He is survived by his wife. Dorothy Pritts Coffman, whom he married on Jan. 30, 1946; three children, James D. Coffman and his wife, Melissa, of Mount Pleasant, Judith D. Shenk of Camp Hill, and J. Colleen Wenner and her husband, David, of Mineral Falls, Texas; five grandchildren, Michelle Coffman, Marcus Wenner and his wife, Heather, Amy Zimmerman and her husband, Scott, Kristin Shenk and Robert Shenk III; two great-grandchildren, Gavin and Cole Zimmerman; and two sisters, Hattie Robbins of Camp Hill, and Doris Rose and her husband, Robert, of Connellville. Friends will be received in the Brooks Funeral Home, Inc., 406 E. Washington St., Mount Pleasant, Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., where funeral services will be held Monday at noon with the Rev. Ronald Pritts, his nephew, officiating. Interment will follow in Green Ridge Memorial Park, Pennsville. American Legion Post #446 of Mount Pleasant will conduct military rites at the cemetery. In lieu of lowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the First United Church of Christ, Mount Pleasant, in memory of Mr. Coffman.
