July 21, 2001

James Stewart Conway, 72, of 674 Main St. died Saturday at home after a long illness. Born in Cleveland on May 26, 1929, son of Timothy J. and Margaret Nelson Conway, he attended schools there and graduated from the University School, where he was captain of the football team. He also graduated from Williams College in 1951 and from Georgetown School of Foreign Service in 1952. He took courses at the School of International Studies in Geneva, Switzerland. He moved to Williamstown in 1986. Mr. Conway served in the Coast Guard from 1953 to 1955 on the Courier, the Voice of America ship broadcasting off the coast of the Greek island of Rhodes. After his military service, he was employed by General Foods Corp. in its international division. In 1958, he entered government service and was an intelligence officer for the Central Intelligence Agency. Over the next 20 years, he and his family lived in Thailand, Brazil, Paris and Washington, D.C. He retired from the CIA in 1978 and became an independent consultant in the fields of security and international business and worked for Stone and Webster Engineering Co. in Boston as a political risk analyst. He was a communicant of St. Patrick's and St. Raphael's churches and a member of the Association of Political Risk Analysts and Rotary International, where he served as past president of the Williamstown chapter. He was a former secretary and president of the Williams College class of 1951. At the time of his death, he was on the advisory board of the Salvation Army of North Adams. During his retirement years, he was active in lay ministry and church outreach. He had short-term missionary assignments in Yugoslavia, Russia and in Brazil, where he helped launch classes for Community Bible Study International. He was a former member of the Full Gospel Businessmen's Association and Gideons International. Both his local-access TV program and newsletter for family and friends were called "Along the Way." In 1999, he and a friend started a monthly men's breakfast at St. Patrick's, which quickly became a popular occasion for fellowship and testimony. He enjoyed international affairs, travel, music and photography. He leaves his wife, the former Linda L. Glick, whom he married Dec. 26, 1983; a daughter, Pauline P. Conway of Takoma Park, Md.; a son, Daniel E. Conway of Los Angeles; nine brothers, Robert F. Conway, Timothy J. Conway, Richard D. Conway, William E. Conway and Gerald A. He was predeceased by two sons, James Stewart Conway Jr., who died in January 1985, and Timothy Corn Conway, who died in March 1985. A vigil service will be held tomorrow, Tuesday, July 24, at 7 p.m. at St. Raphael's Church on Cole Avenue in Williamstown, an occasion to join the family in prayer, song and reminiscence. Following the service, the family will greet friends. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday at 11 at St. Raphael's. Burial will follow in Westlawn Cemetery, Williamstown.
