About James Corbin
One of the first 39 landowners of Woodstock, CT. Owned store with brother Jabez dealing in furs, turpentine, surplus produce which he took to Boston in his well-known "cart" to trade for ammunition, liquor, and "other necessities". "His cart was one of the institutions of Woodstock, its chief avenue of communication with the outside world." He was a prominent citizen, elected to town offices and held in high esteem.
In 1700 troubles arose with the Indians. James' cart was in danger of capture. When news came to town that the cart was approaching, 60 armed men went out to meet it and accompanied Janes safely back to Woodstock.
He purchased a large part of Ashford in 1705. He and brother Jabez were among the 16 men allowed to build pews around the walls of the new church erected in 1721.
