About James Corse

Elizabeth Caitlin's son, James Corse, went to Canada in 1730 to try to bring his sister (Elizabeth) home, without success after she had been kidnapped by the Mohawk in 1704.

James, born around 1692 at Deerfield and died 20 September 1783 at Deerfield. He was a renowned hunter and scout. He lived for a while in Wallingford, New Haven County, Connecticut, around 1717, but was back at Deerfield in 1719. During Father Rasle's war, 1720-1726, he served under Captain Joseph Kellogg. He also saw service during the French and Indian Wars, 1743-1763. In 1730, he made a trip to Canada, with a passport issued by Governor Dummer of Massachusetts, to visit his sister and attempt to retrieve her. He would be married twice. First to Thankful Munn, daughter of Benjamin Munn and Thankful Nims on 17 August 1721 (Sheldon [1895-1896] 1983, 2: 243). She was born 12 January 1703/4 at Deerfield and died 22 June 1746 at the same place. Second to Elizabeth Clesson, daughter of Joseph Clesson and Hannah Arms on 16 July 1747 (Sheldon [1895-1896] 1983, 2: 127). She was born 23 October 1709 at Deerfield and died 4 July 1773 at the same place. James and Thankful had eleven children, four boys and seven girls. With Elizabeth, James had another son and daughter. Sheldon documents his many descendents ([1895-1896] 1983, 2: 134-136, 399-400). James finally settled at Greenfield, Franklin County, Massachusetts, to run a tavern (1:519).
