About James Crichton of Ruthven

JAMES CRICHTON OF RUTHVEN

Provost of Edinburgh

On 29 April 1452 James Crichton of Ruthven received a grant for his life of the King's lands of Rothvene called Rothvendavid, in the lordship of Brechin. In this charter thereof he is designed as ' frater Georgii de Crechtoun de Carnis.' This grant must have been afterwards extended to his heirs, who possessed the estate for many generations. He was Provost of Edinburgh from 1478 to 1483, and sat in Parliament on various occasions. He married Agnes Hepburn, in favour of whom, as well as of himself, he received, on 18 July 1480, a charter of the lands of Blakhouse, in the lordship and barony of Crawfordjohn, which he had purchased from his cousin David, Earl of Crawford.
