James was a soldier during the War of 1812, and his widow, Sally, drew pension in her later years while residing at Lafayette, Macon County, Tennessee. She states that he had blue eyes and light hair. About the year 1820, James came with his brother and parent to Hardin County, KY, and by 1824, he was settled in Smith County, TN. That part of Smith County is now in Macon County, TN. It is believed that James had about 10 children, but only seven are known:
